Types of Bugs

Ants form colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to highly organized colonies which may occupy large territories and consist of millions of individuals. These larger colonies consist mostly of sterile wingless females forming castes of "workers", "soldiers", or other specialized groups.

Cockroaches are one of the most commonly noted household pest insects. They feed on human and pet food, and can leave an offensive odor. They can also passively transport microbes on their body surfaces including those that are potentially dangerous to humans, particularly in environments such as hospitals.

Spiders' have two sections and terminate in fangs that are generally venomous, and fold away behind the upper sections while not in use. The upper sections generally have thick "beards" that filter solids. Spiders occur in a large range of sizes. The smallest are less than 0.015 in body length. The largest and heaviest spiders occur among tarantulas, which can have body lengths up to 3.5 inches and leg spans up to 10 inches. In Arkansas, a black widow is one of the most harmful species of spiders and is found in Arkansas. This spider is timid and will not bite a human unless it is threatened. Brown recluse spiders are usually small, typically about the size of a quarter and are often seen in Arkansas. They are light tan in color. They have a dark shape on their backs. The shape is often compared to a violin.

Termites mostly feed on dead plant material, generally in the form of wood, leaf litter, soil, or animal dung, and about 10 percent of the estimated 4,000 species are economically significant as pests that can cause serious structural damage to buildings, crops or plantation forests.

Rodents include mice, rats, squirrels, gerbils, porcupines, beavers, chipmunks, guinea pigs, and voles. Rodents have sharp incisors that they use to gnaw wood, break into food, and bite predators. Some species have historically been pests, eating seeds stored by people and spreading disease.

A bed bug can individually and collectively cause a number of health effects including skin rashes, psychological effects and allergic symptoms. Bed bug bites may lead to a range of skin manifestations from no visible effects to prominent blisters. Diagnosis involves both finding bed bugs and the occurrence of compatible symptoms. Treatment involves the elimination of the insect but is otherwise symptomatic.

Flea is the common name for insects of the order Siphonaptera which are wingless insects with mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood. Fleas are external parasites, living by hematophagy off the blood of mammals (including bats and humans) and birds.
